OUR GOALS FOR 2021

A CHANCE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

HOW MUCH DO WE HOPE TO RAISE?

R100 000

Our community of paddlers blew us away last year, raising just short of R100 000. This year, we would love to reach that target!

WHAT WILL THE FUNDS BE USED FOR?

Organizational Support

This year we have three goals.

Goal 1:

To enhance the quality of life of households neighbouring the reserve by producing bio char, charcoal briquettes and bio briquettes, that will:

  1. Provide an alternative source of fuel to use for cooking and heating the home.

  2. Enhance soil for growing crops

  3. Can be added to livestock feed

  4. Can be used as a water purifier

  5. And can be used in the bucket and long drop toilet systems to aggregate human waste

Goal 2:

To enhance food security and protein intake through aqua culture and aqua-ponics in the reservoirs below the dam wall. This alternative to poaching and fishing from the dam will reduce the current impact these activities are having on the biodiversity.

(fisherman destroy the habitat used by various species when they clear the areas on the shoreline to fish from. This includes fires and waste plastic).

The one home one garden project is another project that will enable households to improve their food security and even earn an income from excess production.

Goal 3:

Waste 4 Wisdom is a project designed to enhance the value waste, specifically plastics, to have a value for households in the communities neighbouring the Shongweni Nature Reserve. If community households collected waste plastic because it had a value they could derive from it, there would be less plastic lying around. W4W is a household beneficiation project that converts plastic into a value for households that they can benefit from. This includes making roof tiles and floor tiles that they can use for their roofing and flooring in their homes

GROWING SHONGWENI67

Together we are More

Shongweni67 started with just Greg and Sara on the water. 2020 saw 70 boats on the dam (with even more paddlers joining on the Thames, in Belgium and in the Indian Ocean). The MCSA KZN joined us at the crags, offering support from above.
