ABOUT

Mission & Vision

Our Shongweni67 challenge aims to generate funding towards initiatives and projects that will enhance the lives of people neighbouring Shongweni Nature Reserve, and in so doing relieve the stress subsistence users place on the biodiversity of this unique nature reserve.

Community groups neighbouring Shongweni Nature Reserve use the reserve in a number of ways for resources that they need for every day living. They cut tree’s for wood to burn to cook their food and keep warm, they catch fish and hunt for food, harvest plants for medicinal use and livestock owners use the reserve as a pasture for their livestock to graze.

Our mission is to generate an alternative resource for each of these user groups to utilise rather than the resources of the reserve being used and depleted. This includes making bio-briquettes and charcoal briquettes as a source of fuel (to generate heat) from water hyacinth that grows prolifically on the dam; the bio-char from this process has many other uses, including enhancing the soil, purifying water and it can be used in their long drop and bucket toilet systems. Aqua-culture as an alternative source of protein from hunting and fishing and the waste for wisdom project will go a long way of ridding the reserve of excess plastic.
